Sexual function is a complex process involving brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles, blood vessels and is very\nsensitive to stress. Therefore, stressful lifestyle usually induces sexual dysfunction. Recent studies reported that chronic physical\nand psychological stresses modulate neurotransmission in the median pre-optic area and decrease penile blood flow, resulting\nin erectile dysfunction. It also reported that activation of hypothalmo-pitutary-adrenal (HPA) axis leads to enhancement of\nplasma cortisol levels and increase sympathetic system function, this leads to excessive oxidative stress and stress related\ndisorders including sexual dysfunction. Curcuma amada renowned plant in ayurveda system of medicines used asaphrodisiac,\nappetizer, diuretic, asthma and in bronchitis. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Curcuma amada on stress\nmodulated sexual disorder in male mice. Male wistar mice weighing between 20-25 gm were divided into 5 groups (n=6). Group\n1: Normal control received distilled water 1 ml/kg (without stress). Group 2: Stress control received water 1 ml/kg. Group 3:\nReceived standard drug sildenafil citrate 5 mg/kg p.o. Group 4: Received low dose of hydro-alcoholic extract of Curcuma amada\np.o. (LDCA 100 mg/kg). Group 5: Received high dose of hydro-alcoholic extract of Curcuma amada p.o. (HDCA 200 mg/kg). All\nthe treatments were given for 28 consecutive days before immobilization stress (IMB stress). During stress induction water and\nfood were withdrawn for 6 hrs in a day. Exposure to IMB stress for 28 days continuously increases MDA and cortisone,\ndecreases GSH levels, sperm density and alters histology of testes. This may be due to generation of reactive oxygen species in\nrat testes, treatment with Curcuma amada, rhizomes have decreased MDA and cortisone level, increased GSH, sperm density and\nfurther it has restored histoarticulture of testes. This activity may be due to its potential antioxidant activity and due to presence\nof phytochemical constituents like glycosides, saponins and flavonoids in extract....
The objective of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of stem bark of\nDesmodium oojeinense (Roxb.). H. Ohashi against carbon-tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in wistar rats. The\nhepatoprotective activity of the ethanolic extract was assessed in CCl4 induced hepatotoxic rats. Alteration in the levels of\nbiochemical markers of hepatic damage like SGOT, SGPT, ALP and total bilirubin were tested in both CCl4 treated and untreated\ngroups. CCl4 has enhanced the SGOT, SGPT, ALP and total bilirubin in liver. Treatment with ethanolic extract of Desmodium\noojeinense has brought back the altered levels of biochemical markers to the near normal levels in the dose dependent manner.\nResults of histopathological studies also provided supportive evidence for biochemical analysis. Silymarin (100 mg/kg) was\ngiven as a standard hepatoprotective drug. Our findings suggested that the ethanolic extract of stem bark of Desmodium\noojeinense (Roxb.). H. Ohashi possesses the hepatoprotective activity....
Aerva lanata (Linn) Juss. ex. Schult (Amaranthaceae) is widely found as weed on mountains and bare ground. It is an herb which trails on the ground with many branches and leaves are alternately arranged with fine hairs above and with wooly beneath. This study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic and antiinflammatory activity by human red blood cells (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. The methanolic extract of Aerva lanata showed significant anthelmintic and anti-inflammatory activity....
Prosopis cineraria have been traditionally used in the treatment of renal diseases and hyperglycemia. In the present study, ethanolic extract of Prosopis cineraria (EEPC) bark was evaluated for diabetic nephropathy in experimentally induced type-2 diabetic rats. High fat diet and a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin produced type-2 diabetes. Insulin resistance was confirmed by oral glucose tolerance test. A significant elevation in blood glucose and impaired kidney functions was observed in diabetic rats. Four weeks of EEPC treatment (150 and 300 mg/kg/day) significantly decreased the elevated blood glucose levels and restored body weight in diabetic rats. Moreover, significantly decreased serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, urea nitrogen and increased albumin and total proteins. Glomerular hyperfiltration and urinary albumin excretion rate were significantly decreased in EEPC treated diabetic control rats. Increased renal MDA and decreased GSH, SOD and NO metabolites are associated with longstanding diabetes which was significantly restored with four weeks of EEPC treatment. Histopathological observation in diabetic rats showed mesangial expansion, tubular dilatation and glomerular basement membrane thickening, which was dose dependently restored with EEPC treatment. In conclusion, EEPC ameliorates diabetic nephropathy in a rat model of type-2 diabetes....
Stress is an event that we all experience it in our daily life, diverges into multiple human disorders. Long term\nstressful episodes may cause oxidative damage, neuroinflammation and neurotransmitter imbalance that may lead to mental\ndisorder such as anxiety, psychosis, Alzheimers, Parkinsons. Consumption of nutritional diets loaded with therapeutic\nconstituents, may endow with beneficial effects and alleviating stress mediated neuropsychiatric disorders. Therefore, aim of\nour study was to screen Annona squamosa (Sugar apple) juice for its protective effect on brain. Interestingly, Annona squamosa\njuice (ASJ) has shown favorable effects on brain antioxidant biomarkers. ASJ was effective to increase the brain catalase activity\nand GSH levels, whereas reduce the MDA levels in mice. The underlying mechanism of action of ASJ appears to be a net\nconsequence of scavenging of free radicals and neuroprotective effect mediated through its phytoconstituents. Thus\nintroduction of Annona squamosa (Sugar apple) juice on regular basis in our daily diet would help in protecting us from various\nneuropsychiatric problems....
